The Buffalo Soldier Monument on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, was dedicated on July 25, 1992, and honors the African-American soldiers who served in various Buffalo Soldier regiments from 1866 to 1951.
The Buffalo Soldier Monument and other statues in the Buffalo Soldier Commemoration Area celebrate the military contributions made by black men and women, including General Colin L. Powell, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, who initiated the Buffalo Soldier Monument project.
In 1992, General Powell, commissioned artist Eddie Dixon, sculptor of the Buffalo Soldier Monument, to create 100 scaled replicas of the monument. This statue is a cast of #55 of those 100 replicas.
