Always in the Vanguard

"Always in the Vanguard: The Buffalo Soldiers of Company H, Tenth U. S. Cavalry" examines one company of the Buffalo Soldiers. In their first twenty years of active service, Company H, Tenth U. S. Cavalry participated in every Indian campaign on the southern plains. Members of the company were involved in battles from Beecher's Island to San Juan Hill. They served at military posts from Kansas to Texas to Montana and even Vermont. Their history provides an essential view of military life and experience for the black soldiers of the United States Army from the Civil War through World War II.

"Always in the Vanguard" was awarded the Rupert N. Richardson Best Book Award by the West Texas Historical Association in 2023.
